Sunday roast at The Sir John Borlase Warren — Nottingham

I have a theory that it always rains on Sundays; and when it does, what’s better than retreating to a cosy pub to have some nice ales along with a heart-warming Sunday roast? Well, I would take that even on a sunny Sunday.

Living in Canning Circus, we are literally surrounded by pubs and almost all of them have their Sunday roast. We have tried some of them, most notably the one at Hand & Heart which has been covered by Frusher on Food. Today, we will focus on the new Sunday roast of The Sir John Bolase Warren. (tl;dr summary at the end.)

New because The Sir John Borlase Warren’s recent history has been pretty hectic. They initially served standard pub food (burgers and such) but they closed down. After a change of ownership and an important refurbishment, they re-opened but — rather disappointingly — without food. Then — hurrah! — they did food again on some days, and now they have re-launched their Sunday roast.

Since their Sunday menu is not available on their website, I took the liberty to take a picture for you.

Their offering is exactly what you would expect for a Sunday roast. We both opted for the roast pork, and to go straight to the point: it was great.

All of the ingredients were there: the meat, the vegetables, the Yorkshire pudding and the gravy. Each of these was nicely executed. The meat was tender and not overcooked so not dry. The vegetables were of good quality, i.e. they had an actual taste. The potatoes were especially nice. The yorkshire pudding did the job; it was good but not the best I have had. The gravy on the contrary was particularly amazing. It had a flavor quite distinct to what you are usually served.

Then there were two great additions. The pork scratchings definitely looked and tasted homemade but what I really appreciated was the onion and sage stuffing. It was crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and what a taste!

Apart from the food, I cannot deny that they have another advantage to win my heart… (pun intended)

Fire at The Sir John Borlase Warren

The Sunday roast at The Sir John Borlase Warren is not the fanciest you can find and it is of the traditional kind. However, for what it does, it is doing it incredibly well. Add to this a rather low price and I think I have found my favorite Sunday roast in Nottingham so far.
